Our first community shredding event went great! We shred over
1,000 lbs of paper to raise money for the BeMoneySmart USA organ-ization. Being part of the event made us feel good to be doing something to further a mission that could really make a difference in the lives young people. The money we raise from this event goes to fund BeMoneySmartUSA’s free financial literacy and entrepreneurship workshops, camps and school programs for kids ages 8 to young adult. They are free so that students from any socio-economic background have the opportunity to participate in these programs without the worry of cost or accessibility. We both participated in the business and finance camps last summer for free and learned a lot. It was a really great experience and we volunteer to help BMSUSA and to give back.
While we were there we helped people get their boxes, paper bags and huge garbage bags of paper out of their cars and into the shred it truck. We also had the pleasure of serving them delicious fresh-baked donuts and hot coffee from the “Family Donuts” shop in the San Juan Center. It was fun to watch people drive in with their entire trunks full of papers. We even had a few bicyclists pull up with their baskets full of bags of paper. It seemed that the community wanted to help us reach our goal.
At one point we stood at the corner and held a banner to get people to come on out and participate. We considered dancing, but were too embarrassed!
As former students of the BeMoneySmartUSA courses, we volunteered to help the cause so that other kids would have the same chance to be impacted positively the way we were. The program truly helps prepare you for the future while you are still a kid. They taught us how to prevent us from making financial mistakes and helped us get jobs. We volunteer with this organization as much as we can because it makes us feel good and closer to the community. Being involved is the only way to make a difference.
Thanks to all of the customers who visited us on Shred it day! We appreciate your support.
